| Describe Research Opportunities at Your Site | Florida Tech has a very active Neuropsychology Research Team. Students frequently author poster presentations at national conferences (AACN, INS, NAN, Sports Neuropsychology Society), and prepare manuscripts to submit for publication. Multiple databases exist within geriatric/memory disorder and sports concussion populations, and there are also opportunities for collecting new data. Recent projects in concussion/sports include examining balance problems as a predictor of concussion severity and recovery, potential methods of assisting athletes recover faster from concussions, and ways to identify mental health issues among athletes. At the memory clinic, students recently explored a method of determining insight (anosognosia) among individuals with Alzheimer’s disease, and our team has been gathering updated normative data for several neuropsychological tests toward hopefully refining our differential diagnostic procedures, particularly among the oldest old. Dr. LoGalbo also has interests in exploring variables that influence, predict, or improve outcomes of sports concussion injuries including time to recovery and lingering post-concussive symptoms, as well as factors that mediate the onset and progression of memory or other cognitive decline beyond expectation for age in an elderly population. |
| Please Add Any Additional Information to Include in Your Listing | Florida Tech's focus area in Clinical Neuropsychology offers extensive opportunities for training in geriatric neuropsychology through the Health First Memory Disorder Clinic and in sports concussion management through the Concussion Management Program and affiliation with the Athletics' Department. At the Memory Clinic, students learn how to administer, score, and interpret a neuropsychological test battery and subsequently generate brief yet comprehensive neuropsychological evaluation reports under the direct supervision of a board certified clinical neuropsychologist. Additionally, students interact and learn from other medical professionals in neurology, geriatrics, psychiatry, nursing, and social work during a weekly Case Review. In the sports concussion program, students conduct baseline assessments as well as post-trauma and follow-up evaluations to determine injury severity and readiness for return-to-play. Students also provide behavioral concussion recovery guidelines as appropriate, assist with developing a return-to-learn plan and academic accommodations, and frequently interact with Athletic Training staff regarding athlete progress and recovery. Advanced practica are available nearby in both adult and pediatric settings, as well as inpatient and rehabilitation. Research opportunities cover applied neuropsychological research as well as brain neuropathology and diagnostic imaging. |
